Description
Phenoxyethanol is an aromatic ether organic compound (chemical formula: C₈H₁₀O₂) with preservative, bactericidal, and solvent properties. It is widely used as a low-irritation preservative in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and daily chemical products. Its antimicrobial spectrum covers Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and some fungi, making it an important alternative to traditional preservatives such as parabens.
Properties
Appearance: Colorless to slightly yellowish, transparent, oily liquid with a slight aromatic odor.
Solubility: Freely soluble in ethanol and glycerin, slightly soluble in water (1g/100mL).
Stability: Acid and alkali resistant (pH 3-10), and resistant to high temperature decomposition.
Broad-spectrum antibacterial properties: Effectively inhibits common microorganisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.
Low irritation: Milder than formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, suitable for products with sensitive skin.
Synergistic: Often combined with ethylhexylglycerin, potassium sorbate, and other preservatives to enhance preservative effectiveness.
